Hi! Welcome to class today. Our slang has to do withplaying

So yes, a player can mean to…it can be someonewho plays a game, or someone who even acts in atheater

一個(gè)player的意思可以是一個(gè)打游戲的人,或者一個(gè)在劇場(chǎng)里表演的人

but now it's starting to mean someone who playswith people: tricks them

不過(guò)它還有另外一個(gè)意思 就是一個(gè)人騙別人

Usually it's a guy when he wants to have a lot of girlfriends, because he tricks them into beingwith him

一般來(lái)講是一個(gè)男生想有幾個(gè)女朋友,因?yàn)樗麜?huì)騙她們和他好

Think of it as treating relationships as a game. If you just want to make people do things foryou, then you might be a player

可以想成是把感情當(dāng)作游戲,如果你只想別人付出,那你或許是一個(gè)player

You can say someone is a player, like, if you see a friend, if he, you know, likes to trick peopleinto doing things for them

如果有一個(gè)朋友喜歡哄騙別人去為他做事,你可以說(shuō)那個(gè)人是一個(gè)player

you can say, "hey, you know that guy over there? Be careful, he's kind of a player"

Or you can use it with a really close male friend. You can say, "hey, what up, playa"

But usually, someone being a player: it's…not really a good thing

Now let's talk about etymology. Our root for today is "circ." C-I-R-C. C-I-R-C in Latin means, "aring," or "round"

現(xiàn)在我們來(lái)講詞源吧。我們今天的詞根是circ。在拉丁語(yǔ)里的意思是一個(gè)環(huán),或者圓

You can easily think of a word that uses this root. Yup. Circle. Of course, circles are things thatare round. In the shape of a ring

And what if you circulate? If you are at a party and you're circulating, what does that mean

Circulate是什么呢?如果你在一個(gè)聚會(huì)上circulate 是什么意思呢

Hmm..Well, you're walking around, Starting here, walking around, talking to lots of people, andthen you come back

意思就是你來(lái)回走,從這里開(kāi)始,和很多人聊天,然后又回到了原地

Same thing with your blood. It's circulating through your body right now

It starts here, goes on some crazy path, and comes back

And "circadian," is something that happens every 24 hours. We all have circadian rhythms,hopefully

We wake up a certain time, we go to sleep a certain time, everything happens the same wayevery 24 hours

So our habits kind of move in a circle too. And one of my favorite words that uses this root is"circa"

You might see this in history books, or especially in museums

If you see an old vase from circa 1340 A.D. Then you know it's from around 1340. Get it

Circa means around this time. Around? Like a circle? So I always thought that was kind of fun

So you know circ means ring, so you're moving in a circular fashion, or you know that a time isaround some time
