shape up直譯過來就是：“塑造好的形象”，這個(gè)短語的正確意思是：“好好表現(xiàn)，好好干”。因此，當(dāng)美國人說"You'd better shape up if you want to stay on."時(shí)，他/她要表達(dá)的意思就是:"You must performwell if you want to keep this job."、"You have to behave yourself if you don't want to getfired."。
