40課 Food and Talk

Last week at a dinner-party, the hostess asked meto sit next to Mrs Rumbold. Mrs Rumbold was alarge,unsmiling lady in a tight black dress. She didnot even look up when I took my seat beside her.Her eyes were fixed on her plate and in a shorttime, she was busy eating. I tried to makeconversation. 'A new play is coming to" TheGlobe" soon,' I said. "Will you be seeing it ?"'No,'she answered. 'Will you be spending yourholidays abroad this year?' I asked. 'No,' sheanswered. 'Willyou be staying in England?' I asked. 'No,' she answered.In despair, I asked herwhether she was enjoying her dinner. 'Young man,' she answered,'if you ate more and talkedless, we would both enjoy your dinner !'

4. Her eyes were fixed on her plate and in a short time, she was busy eating.

她的眼睛盯著她的盤子，不一會兒就忙著吃起來了。

語言點1 fix on = stare at = gaze at = focus on 盯著

語言點2 busy表達某人忙于做某事時，常用以下兩種表達：

1) be busy doing sth.

I am busy preparing supper.

我正在忙著準備晚飯。

2) be busy with / at sth.

The students are busy with / at their homework in the classroom.

學生們正在教室里忙著做家庭作業(yè)。

注意：在表示某人忙于做某事時，也可以用occupied代替busy。例：

Father was occupied / busy with cleaning the house.

父親正在忙著清掃房屋。

5. I tried to make conversation.

我試圖找個話題和她聊聊。

語言點 make conversation是指出于禮貌閑談幾句。

6. A new play is coming to “The Globe” soon , I said.‘Will you be seeing it ? ’

“一出新劇要在“環(huán)球劇院”上演了，”我說，“您去看嗎?”

語言點 movie / play be coming to somewhere.是指某電演/戲劇即將在某地上演。
