[00:-7.00]Section 1 New words and ideas

[00:-8.00]The Dream keeper Opening doors to literature

[00:-9.00]Somewhere inside your heart your dream lies waiting.

[00:10.00]If you are not sure how to find your dream, ask the Dream Keeper.

[00:11.00]Her heart is the sun.Her eyes are the stars.

[00:12.00]Her voice is the wind. And she will whisper your dream into your ear.

[00:13.00]Once,long ago, there was a girl who could talk to the birds.

[00:14.00]When she was little, she was happy. She walked in the forest

[00:15.00]and played by the stream and never thought about her purpose in life.

[00:16.00]But as she grew older,she asked,"Why am I here?Where am I going?Who am I?"

[00:17.00]But no one could answer these questions.

[00:18.00]So one day she walked deep into the forest.

[00:19.00]"Maybe the birds will know,"she though.

[00:20.00]"They are my friends and I will talk to them.

[00:21.00]Look at how they live. There is no hesitation in their flight.

[00:22.00]There is no hesitation in their song.Surely they know their purpose.

[00:23.00]Maybe they know mine, too."She walked until she saw a beautiful eagle.

[00:24.00]"Eagle,"she asked,"What is your purpose?"

[00:25.00]"To fly above the earth,"the eagle replied.

[00:26.00]"From there,I can see all things. Here is my feather.Fly with me."

[00:27.00]Next she saw a hawk."Hawk,"she asked,"what is your purpose?"

[00:28.00]"To be a messenger,"the hawk replied."I bring news of things to come.

[00:29.00]Here is my feather.Listen for my call."Then a tiny hummingbird flew by.

[00:30.00]"Hummingbird,"she asked,"what is your purpose?"

[00:31.00]"To love the flowers,"the hummingbird replied.

[00:32.00]"My wings are their music. Here is my feather.Hold it close to your heart."

[00:33.00]Then she saw a graceful swan.

[00:34.00]"Swan,"she asked,"what is your purpose?"

[00:35.00]"To live in beauty,"the sawn replied.

[00:36.00]"Though the water is muddy,I see only my refection. Here is my feather.

[00:37.00]Live in peace."The girl sat down next to a river.

[00:38.00]The sunlight warmed the water and it was bearuiful, but she was sad.

[00:39.00]"I know the purpose of all the birds,"she said."but what is my purpose?"

[00:40.00]Then a dragonfly with wings like paper flew by.

[00:41.00]The dragonfly saw the girl was sad and wanted to help her.

[00:42.00]"And you,dragonfly,"the girl finally asked,

[00:43.00]"What is your purpose?"

[00:44.00]"To help people find their dreams,"the dragonfly replied.

[00:45.00]"Help me,then,"the girl said."I wish to know my dream."

[00:46.00]"You must visit the Dream Keeper,"the dragonfly said.

[00:47.00]"She will tell you.She lives nearby."

[00:48.00]The girl looked around. There was no path anywhere.

[00:49.00]There was no one calling her name.

[00:50.00]The only noise was the sound of the river going over the rocks.

[00:51.00]"Where is her house?"the girl asked.

[00:52.00]"The wind will tell you,"the dragonfly replied.

[00:53.00]"Listen to the wond."Then the dragonfly flew away.

[00:54.00]The girl stood up.She listened for the wind, but the air was still.

[00:55.00]Then a soft breeze blew in the trees and she followed the breeze into the forest.

[00:56.00]Finally the breeze stopped and the forest was still.

[00:57.00]"Dream keeper?"the girl asked softly.

[00:58.00]But there was only silence. The the grass quivered and the leaves rustled

[00:59.00]and a voice as beautiful as spring whispered,"Ask your question."

[-1:00.00]"I know the purpose of all the birds,"the girl said,"but what is my purpose?"

[-1:-1.00]"To find your dream and follow it,"the Dream Keeper replied."

[-1:-2.00]"Then tell me my dream,"the girl said."You are the Dream Keeper." [-1:-3.00]"Come close and I will whisper your dream into your ear.

[-1:-4.00]But you must be still.Listen.Listen.Hush."

[-1:-5.00]The girl felt the breeze blow gently, gently,

[-1:-6.00]oh,so gently into her waiting, waiting ear,

[-1:-7.00]and with a smile she recognized now and forever the voice of the Dream Keeper.

[-1:-8.00]Then from within her own heart she heard the music of the hummingbird[-1:-9.00]and she saw the beauty of the swan in the water,

[-1:10.00]and she heard the sharp call of the hawk,

[-1:11.00]and she flew with the eagle high above the earth,

[-1:12.00]and she knew her dream and she followed it and she was happy.

[-1:13.00]Powm

[-1:15.00]Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly.

[-1:16.00]Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go

[-1:23.00]Section 4 Reading for meaning

[-1:24.00]A Pair of Tickets

[-1:25.00]The plane takes off.I close my eyes. How can I describe to them

[-1:26.00]in my broken Chinese about our mother's life?

[-1:27.00]Where shoud I begin?

[-1:28.00]The minute our train enters Shenzhen,I feel different.

[-1:29.00]I can feel my excitement rising,my blood rushing,

[-1:30.00]my bones aching with a familiar old pain.

[-1:31.00]And I think,my mother was right.I am becoming Chinese.

[-1:32.00]"Cannot be helped,"my mother said when I was fifteen

[-1:33.00]and had strongly denied what I had any Chinese whatsoever below my skin.

[-1:34.00]I was a grade 10 at Galileo High School in San Francisco,

[-1:35.00]and all my Caucasian friends agreed:I was about as Chinese as they were.

[-1:36.00]But my mother had studied at a famous nursing school in Shanghai,

[-1:37.00]and she said she knew all about genetics. So ther was no doubt in her mind,

[-1:38.00]whether I agreed or not:Once you ar born Chinese,

[-1:39.00]you cannot help but feel and think Chinese.

[-1:40.00]"Someday you will see,"said my mother.

[-1:41.00]"It's in your blood, waiting to be let out."

[-1:42.00]But today I realize I've never really known what it means to be Chinese.

[-1:43.00]I am thirty-six years old.

[-1:44.00]My mother is dead and I am on a train, carrying with me her dreams of coming home.

[-1:45.00]"Wake up,we're here,"said my father.

[-1:46.00]And I awake with my heart pounding in my throat.

[-1:47.00]I look out the window and we're already on the runway.

[-1:48.00]It's gray outside. And now I'm walking down the steps of the plane,

[-1:49.00]onto the tarmac and toward the building.

[-1:50.00]If only,I think,if only my mother had lived long enough

[-1:51.00]to be the one walking toward them.

[-1:52.00]I am so nervous that I cannot even feel my feet.

[-1:53.00]I am just moving somehow.

[-1:54.00]Somebody shouts,"She's arrived!"And then I see her.

[-1:55.00]Her short hair. Her small body. And that same look on her face.

[-1:56.00]She has the back of her hand pressed hard against her mouth.

[-1:57.00]She is crying as though she had gone through a terrible ordeal

[-1:58.00]and were happy it is over.

[-1:59.00]And I know it's not my mother, yet it is the same look she had

[-2:00.00]when I was five and had disappeared all afternoon,

[-2:-1.00]for such a long time, that she was convinced I was dead.

[-2:-2.00]And when I miraculously appeared,

[-2:-3.00]sleepy-eyed,crawling from underneath my bed,

[-2:-4.00]she wept and laughed, biting the back of her hand to make sure it was true.

[-2:-5.00]And now I see her again, two of her, waving, and in one hand there is a photo,

[-2:-6.00]the Polaroid I sent them.As soon as I get beyond the gate,

[-2:-7.00]we run embracing, all hesitations and expectations forgotten.

[-2:-8.00]"Mama,Mama,"we all murmur,as if she were among us.

[-2:-9.00]My sisters look at me,proudly.

[-2:10.00]"Meimei jandale,"says one sister proudly to the other.

[-2:11.00]"Little sister has grown up."I look at their faces again [-2:12.00]and I see no trace of my mother in them.

[-2:13.00]Yet they still look familiar. And now I also see what part of me is Chinese.

[-2:14.00]It is so obvious. It is my family. It is in our blood.

[-2:15.00]After all these years,it can finally be let go.

[-2:16.00]My sisters and I stand, arms around each other,

[-2:17.00]laughing and wiping the tears from each other's eyes.

[-2:18.00]The flash of the Polaroid goes off and my father hands me the snapshot.

[-2:19.00]My sisters and I watch quietly together, eager to see what develops.

[-2:20.00]The gray-green surface changes to the bright colours of our three images,

[-2:21.00]sharpening and deepening all at once.

[-2:22.00]And although we don't speak,I know we all see it:

[-2:23.00]Together we look like our mother.

[-2:24.00]Her same eyes, her same mouth, open in surprise to see,at last,

[-2:25.00]her long-cherished wish.

[-2:26.00]Reading

[-2:27.00]Reading is important. As a student, one should learn to read respond[-2:28.00]to a wide range of writing to build and understanding of written materials,

[-2:29.00]of himself/herself,and of others.

[-2:30.00]Reading is a complex and interactive process.

[-2:31.00]It is a primary means of acquiring and using information.

[-2:32.00]Society regards reading as extremely important to daily living.

[-2:33.00]Because reading is fundamental to the mastery of other school subjects,

[-2:34.00]students at all levels must learn to understand what they read.

[-2:35.00]They must know and use various strategies

[-2:36.00]-ways of unlocking the meaning of words and larger blocks of text

[-2:37.00]-to become successful readers.

[-2:38.00]Students should be challenged to read literature and other materials

[-2:39.00]that reflect and stimulate their interests and intellectual abilities.

[-2:40.00]They should read a wide variety of materials,

[-2:41.00]including fiction,nonfiction,poetry,drama,

[-2:42.00]and other written works that show the richness and diversity of life.

[-2:43.00]Reading is more than rapidly running one's eyes over the words printed on a page.

[-2:44.00]It is more than practicing vocabulary skills.

[-2:45.00]To really read a passage, one must understand how all the words together

[-2:46.00]say what the writer intends.

[-2:47.00]If a reader understands what he or she has read,

[-2:48.00]the reader will be able to put the writer's ideas

[-2:49.00]and information into his or her own words.

[-2:50.00]All reading is done for a purpse.

[-2:51.00]When you read a humourous story because you enjoy it,

[-2:52.00]your purpose is entertainment.Sometimes, you read to finish a task.

[-2:53.00]For example, your teacher may say something like,

[-2:54.00]"I want you to read Chapter Three and then..."

[-2:55.00]The words that follow for "and then"set the purpose for that reading task.

[-2:56.00]Reading,whether for a school assignment or for one's own enjoyment,

[-2:57.00]is one of the best wasy to discover and understand oneself and the world.
