Mr Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and top White House aide, told the Senate intelligence committee that he had “nothing to hide” as he described four meetings with Russians that occurred during the campaign and the transition after the election.
“I did not collude, nor know of anyone else in the campaign who colluded, with any foreign government,” Mr Kushner said in written testimony released on Monday, which he subsequently read out verbatim at a short press briefing following his committee appearance. “I had no improper contacts. I have not relied on Russian funds to finance my business activities in the private sector.”
Mr Kushner is one of several Trump campaign aides who are being forced to answer for meetings or connections with Russian officials. Paul Manafort, the former campaign chairman, and Don Jr, the president’s eldest son, are expected to testify before another Senate committee about their Russia connections.
In his statement, Mr Kushner denied reports that he had attempted to create a “secret back channel” with the Kremlin. He said his meetings with the Russian ambassador and a Russian banker “should be viewed through the lens of a fast-paced campaign with thousands of meetings and interactions”.
Mr Kushner said he had “perhaps four contacts” with Russians ahead of Mr Trump’s inauguration in January but that none were “impactful” on the election. Among the four was an April 2016 meeting with Sergei Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the US, at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, which had not been previously disclosed.
