'Tell me, Helen,' said she, 'have you ever heard anyone whistle in the dead of the night?'

'告訴我，海倫，'她說(shuō)，'在夜深人靜的時(shí)候，你聽(tīng)到過(guò)有人吹口哨沒(méi)有？'

'Never,' said I.

'從來(lái)沒(méi)有聽(tīng)到過(guò)，我說(shuō)。

'I suppose that you could not possibly whistle, yourself, in your sleep?'

'Certainly not. But why?'

'Because during the last few nights I have always, about three in the morning, heard a low, clear whistle.

I am a light sleeper, and it has awakened me.

'Very likely. And yet if it were on the lawn, I wonder that you did not hear it also.'

'極其可能?？墒侨绻菑牟萜耗莾簛?lái)的，我感到奇怪你怎么會(huì)沒(méi)有同樣地聽(tīng)到。'

'Ah, but I sleep more heavily than you.'

'啊，但是，我一般睡得比你沉。'

'Well, it is of no great consequence, at any rate.'

'好啦，不管怎么說(shuō)，這關(guān)系都不大。'

She smiled back at me, closed my door, and a few moments later I heard her key turn in the lock."
