'Tell me, Helen,' said she, 'have you ever heard anyone whistle in the dead of the night?'

'告訴我，海倫，'她說，'在夜深人靜的時候，你聽到過有人吹口哨沒有？'

'Never,' said I.

'從來沒有聽到過，我說。

'I suppose that you could not possibly whistle, yourself, in your sleep?'

'我想你睡著的時候，不可能吹口哨吧？'

'Certainly not. But why?'

'當然不會，你為什么要問這個呢？'

'Because during the last few nights I have always, about three in the morning, heard a low, clear whistle.

'因為這幾天的深夜，大約清晨三點鐘左右，我總是聽到輕輕的清晰的口哨聲。

I am a light sleeper, and it has awakened me.

我是一個睡不沉的人，所以就被吵醒了。

I cannot tell where it came from–perhaps from the next room, perhaps from the lawn.

我說不出那聲音是從哪兒來的，可能來自隔壁房間，也可能來自草坪。

I thought that I would just ask you whether you had heard it.'

我當時就想，我得問問你是否也聽到了。'

'No, I have not. It must be those wretched gypsies in the plantation.'

'沒有，我沒聽到過。一定是種植園里那些討厭的吉卜賽人。'

'Very likely. And yet if it were on the lawn, I wonder that you did not hear it also.'

'極其可能?？墒侨绻菑牟萜耗莾簛淼模腋械狡婀帜阍趺磿]有同樣地聽到。'

'Ah, but I sleep more heavily than you.'

'啊，但是，我一般睡得比你沉。'

'Well, it is of no great consequence, at any rate.'

'好啦，不管怎么說，這關(guān)系都不大。'

She smiled back at me, closed my door, and a few moments later I heard her key turn in the lock."
