該用法來自諺語: Grasp the nettle and it won't sting you. (大膽抓荊棘,荊棘不刺手。你不怕困難,困難就怕你。)如果輕碰蕁麻很刺手,但是緊握反而不刺手。于是grasp the nettle就表示"迎難而上; 知難而進; 大膽抓棘手問題"。
